Figures from the Office for National Statistics show there were nearly 6.9 million such family homes in England in 2011, down from almost 7.1 million in 2001. This decline has been reflected in the number of newly completed family homes, which has also fallen for the past five years. The figures reveal that 4,100 homes were built in England in 2011 - around one in every 1000 - with the total number of new family homes being 26,000. This has fallen by around 500 in the last five years, with 25,500 homes completed in 2009 and 2010. The ONS's research shows that the number of family homes fell most sharply in the regions of the UK with the lowest numbers, particularly in the north. The biggest drop was in Greater Manchester, where there were 1,563 new family homes in 2011 - around one in every 500 - down from more than 1,700 in 2001. The Northern Ireland population and census unit has not changed over the past decade but a new Local Population Register was introduced in 2007, which includes 'adults' who were born between 1973 and 1976 and are considered to be 'local' to the Greater Belfast area. The ONS says that the different figures for the regions reflect the fact that the counts for Greater Belfast were compared to figures for a different census unit in the Northern Ireland figures. A spokesman for the ONS said: 'These figures show that the number of family homes has fallen in recent years, especially since 2006. 'The family home plays a central role in family life, providing a stable environment and a good start in life for children and younger people. 'Family homes are usually larger and more expensive than one-person homes and are generally less likely to be in areas that are economically deprived. 'In London and the South East the proportion of new family homes has increased, while in the North, the West Midlands and the North East, the number has fallen.' In the new census statistics, the ONS has also calculated the proportion of homes with children aged between 16 and 19 years in local authorities
